Aruba has several beaches where you can wade in, put on a mask and instantly find yourself among parrotfish, angelfish and sergeant majors without needing to board a boat. The three best shore-snorkel spots are Arashi, Malmok and Boca Catalina, all located along the northwestern coastline.
Arashi Beach offers the most dramatic shore snorkeling on the island. Coral formations begin at about six to eight feet of depth and extend down to 30 feet. On a clear day, visibility can reach 60 to 100 feet and the reef hosts over 200 fish species. Arrive before 9 AM to get the calmest surface conditions and the best light for seeing color underwater.
Malmok Beach is smaller and less visited than Arashi, which means the reef sees less disturbance. Multiple coral formations fan out from the shore at depths of four to six feet before dropping deeper. Visibility typically runs 40 to 80 feet. Sea turtles are spotted here regularly, especially in the early morning.
Boca Catalina is where our guided tours make a snorkel stop as well, but it is also easily accessible from shore. Entry depth is six to eight feet, extending to about 30 feet. The site has gentle water, good visibility and is suitable for beginner snorkelers. A local tip is to enter from the northern end of the small beach to reach the best coral concentration quickly.
For shore snorkeling, rent or bring your own mask, snorkel and fins. Apply reef-safe sunscreen before entering the water to protect the coral ecosystem. Watch for sea urchins near rocks, keep your fins above the sand to avoid stinging your hands, and never touch or stand on coral. If you prefer guided access to these same sites plus the SS Antilla shipwreck, our Morning Splash Adventure covers all the highlights with gear included.
