Yes, Aruba has three fascinating caves worth visiting, all located within Arikok National Park in the island's northeastern interior. Together they offer a striking contrast to the beach experience most visitors expect, combining geological wonder with over 1,000 years of indigenous Arawak history.
Fontein Cave is the most accessible and historically significant. Its walls are decorated with ancient Arawak petroglyphs, believed to be more than a thousand years old, depicting human figures, animals and geometric patterns in faded red and black pigment. The cave is shallow enough to explore without stooping and requires no special equipment. Rangers are stationed at the entrance and can provide context for the artwork.
Quadirikiri Cave, also known as Two Holes Cave, is the most dramatic of the three. Two large openings in the ceiling allow shafts of sunlight to penetrate the interior, creating an otherworldly light show during midday hours. Fruit bats roost in the deeper sections and can be seen swooping through the beams of light. A flashlight is useful for exploring beyond the lit sections. Moderate fitness is required as the floor is uneven.
Huliba Cave is nicknamed the Tunnel of Love and lives up to its reputation as the most adventurous cave on the island. Sections require crawling on hands and knees through narrow passages. It is not suitable for guests who are claustrophobic, but those who push through are rewarded with surprisingly large interior chambers and eerie formations. Bring a reliable flashlight, wear closed-toe shoes and ideally visit with a guide.
Arikok National Park charges approximately 15 US dollars for adult entry and is open daily. A 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended for the interior roads, which are rocky and unpaved. Pack water, sunscreen and good footwear. The caves are a genuine highlight for anyone interested in Aruba beyond the coastline, and visiting them on a half-day excursion pairs well with a snorkel tour on the same day.
